You discovered that your little one has lice. The first feeling that is trying is embarrassment, because you imagine that others will think that you have not been able to care for your child. Then you are tempted to panic, because you do not know how this situation came about and, especially, what to do next.
You should know that head lice - lice - are common in children, especially when entering the community, such as kindergartens and schools, and are not related to poor hygiene. Most commonly they occur among children between the ages of 3 and 11 years.
How do you recognize lice
The lice are parasites with six legs that have the size of a sesame seed. They usually have a skin color and a flat shape, which makes them difficult to identify. Lindini, meaning the eggs that females lay on their hair close to the scalp, are even harder to observe.
Lice do not jump or fly, so the only way to transmit them is direct contact with infested hair. If it is not on the hair, it dehydrates and dies very quickly. Instead, they can withstand submersion for up to six hours, so the simple head wash does not kill them. The most common sign of this parasite is itching, a sensation that intensifies especially at night.
What measures should be taken
It is important to act as quickly as possible, as lice grow rapidly and can spread as well. It is easiest to check the degree of infestation on dry hair, at the root of the hair, behind the ears and in the area of the head.
Shampoo for lice
The usual shampoo has no effect in the case of pediculosis. Special shampoos are needed, with formulas that suffocate and dehydrate the head lice and their eggs shortly after application. These shampoos do not contain insecticides, so they can be used safely. The shampoo is applied to the hair and allowed to act for 10-15 minutes, then it is rinsed with plenty of water. These shampoos against lice are sold with a special comb, with long and very thick teeth. Hair should be combed in combination with this comb. This removes all lice and lindens found. The treatment with lice shampoo is repeated the next day.
Lotion anti lice
Also in trade you will be able to find lotions in the form of spray that have the role of favoring the detachment of lice and eggs from the hairs, which are then removed with the help of a special comb. The use of such a lotion does not require the use of a shampoo, because it acts on the same principle. The liquid is applied to the hair, after which a plastic helmet is placed and left to act for several hours. Then comb the hair with a thick comb and wash with shampoo.
Foam anti lice
Another modern lint removal product is anti-lice foam. It also has the role of soothing the itching sensation in the skin.
Gas and vinegar with salt are some of the oldest methods of removing lice. Unfortunately, they attack the skin of the scalp causing irritation and burning sensation. With olive oil, grease the head and scalp of the affected person, then cover with a shower head and only in the morning wash the hair with shampoo. The still wet hair is combed with the special comb for removing lice and lindens. One of the popular remedies is garlic. From a few garlic masters a paste is formed in which lemon juice is added, then applied on the scalp. After 30 minutes rinse with warm water.
The child must be kept in quarantine
An essential measure to prevent the spread of infestation with lice and other children is the introduction of the child into quarantine. This means that, until the lice and lindens are completely eliminated, the child will be isolated and will not come into contact with other children. It is indicated that the isolation period should last as little as possible in order not to be traumatic for the child. Also within the family, the use of hygiene items such as towels or hair brushes with those of the louse infested person will be avoided.
